The
river at Dalby was very pretty and an ideal place to study rivers. We
were reading
The
Wind in the Willows at the time of our visit and spending a day by
the river really brought the story to life. |

It was
easy to see how the river had meandered over time. |
The
water sweeps to the outside of each bend, eroding the bank there. |
The
water flows more slowly on the inside of the bend than it does on the
outside. Stones and silt from the river bed are deposited here. |
We
worked in teams to study the river and realised how important it was to
communicate clearly with each other. |
We
measured the flow rate of the river by timing how long it took for a
ball to travel over a fixed distance. We repeated our results to make
them as accurate as possible. The tricky bit was catching the ball at
the end! |
When the
water level was high, the river cut through the meandering loop and left
behind and
oxbow lake – it’s to the left of the trees! |
| Inevitably, some of us got water in our wellies. Thank goodness we had all brought spare clothes with us! |
