As part of the school’s involvement in the local Creative Contexts for Learning project, we held an arts week, during which the normal timetable was suspended and arts activities took centre stage.

We invited four professional artists in to school to work with children of different ages.

WENDY CHAN
Wendy Chan worked with the Foundation Stage children in creating two colourful pieces of felt work, one depicting Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the other showing Incy Wincy Spider. One of those pieces of work will go on display in the reception area and the other in the school hall.

The children also made individual pieces to take home.

‘I liked putting the glitter on the sun. The glitter felt funny and tickled my hands.’ Foundation Stage Child

DAVID MELL
David Mell, a local authority arts teaching and learning consultant, worked with Year 1 and 2 children and Mrs Martin from the Friends of Acre Heads, in creating an exciting new outdoor activity area. Using willow branches, a willow tunnel with willow windows, was built next to the ‘adventure playground’. The children thoroughly enjoyed the digging and the planting and will certainly enjoy using their willow play area.

‘My favourite bit was making the willow house. We can go inside it. In a few weeks time it will have leaves all over it.’ Year 2 Child

PHILIP COX
Philip Cox, well known for creating ‘paper people’, worked with the Year 3 and 4 children to create a large model of the sphinx which stands next to the pyramids at Giza in Egypt. That model now proudly guards our school entrance!

‘It was fun because we did something different to what we usually do.’ Year 4 Child

MARK POWERS
Mark Powers, a sculptor, worked with Year 5 and 6 children creating plaster shapes which will form a huge mosaic. He also worked with groups of children to cast large geometric concrete shapes, following a number sequence. These will be part of an outdoor classroom and seating area, which will be constructed near the junior entrance in the near future.

‘Last week it was fun because we made a number sculpture. Some people got to use concrete with Mark Powers. It was good watching because there was a lot to see and Mark explained what he was doing really well.’ Year 5 Child

We were very fortunate to have decent weather during the week which meant that some of the children were able to join Mark outside to help with mixing the concrete for the main part of the sculpture. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the job (it was quick-setting concrete!) there was not enough time for all of the children to take part physically, but everybody did get to work with Mark on the main activity and see what was happening outside.

I liked putting the grass on the bottom of the spider picture.  I liked putting the glitter on the sun.  The glitter felt funny and tickled my hands.  I want to do the sky again.  It was made out of wool.  It felt soft.  Wendy, the sculptor, made the rainbow in different colours.  My friends made a Goldilocks picture.  Wendy helped me sprinkle on the silver glitter.  It was really shiny.  We sprinkled it on the green grass.
Boy (4)

I liked the painting of the umbrella.  It was really fun and I like painting.  I had to put my hands in soapy, sloppy mush and I had to roll it up and it felt really soft and squishy.

The sloppy mush was bubbly and it felt like mashed potato.  If there was another art week I would like to do big paintings with our hands and feet. I would like to do that because I like messy stuff and my mum doesn’t let me do it at home.
Girl (5)

Huge thanks must go to all of those people who have helped to make the week such a success. Thanks go to Mrs Jordan who has coordinated the whole project and to all of the other staff who also put in extra time to make sure that the activities were as much fun as possible. Thanks must also go to all of the helpers who gave their time during the week, supporting the children and the artists.

Many thanks to everybody who helped the children raise sponsor money which added to the funds available for the activities during the week.
